In a remarkable archaeological breakthrough, an Egyptian-Italian mission working in Aswan, Egypt, has uncovered 33 ancient tombs dating back to the Late Period and the Greco-Roman Period.
These hidden treasures were found near the Agha Khan cemetery and are rich with history, revealing much about the lives of those who once inhabited the nearby island of Elephantine.
The tombs, belonging to the middle class of that era, offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. Some were cut into the bedrock, while others boasted more elaborate designs with vaulted entrances and open courtyards. Inside, archaeologists discovered a wealth of funerary equipment, including stone and wooden coffins, terracotta figurines, and offering tables.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this discovery is the anthropological study conducted on the mummified remains. It revealed that a significant portion—around 30-40%—of those buried were newborns, teenagers, or young adults. The study also unearthed evidence of various health issues among the deceased, including infectious diseases and metabolic disorders.
One particularly striking find was the remains of a woman who had survived a femur amputation, indicating advanced medical knowledge and practices of the time. Other remains showed signs of anemia, tuberculosis, osteoarthritis, and nutritional deficiencies, painting a vivid picture of the challenges faced by these ancient people.
