Ben Ezra Synagogue Reopens to Public

September 13, 2023

Located in the Religious Complex in Old Cairo, the Ben Ezra Synagogue opened its doors once again to the public after it was closed to conduct essential restoration work to the sacred building.

The synagogue is one of the oldest and most important synagogues in Egypt, it was first constructed in the 12th century AD and was later rebuilt in the 19th century AD. It is associated with Abraham Ben Ezra, one of the great Jewish scholars and philosophers of his time. The synagogue was originally a church and is rectangular in shape.

It consists of two floors, the first is dedicated to men and the second is reserved to women. The synagogue houses important scripture related to Jewish traditions and customs in Egypt, along with their details about their social life.
