Polish scientists working at the Warsaw Mummy Project have recently discovered that a previously thought male mummy is actually a female mummy that died when she was about 7 months pregnant.
The mummy was believed to be male because its coffin and sarcophagus had an inscription containing the name of a male priest called “Hor-Djehuti”. Most likely she was placed in the wrong coffin either in ancient times or by 19th century antiquity dealers when the mummy was found.
The woman was between 20-30 years old when she died in the 1st century BCE. She was most likely of high-status in ancient Egypt based on the quality of mummification. The scanning technology has also revealed a rich set of amulets placed within the mummy wrappings.
