Restoration of the Dome of Sultan Qansuh Abu Said

April 26, 2021

Located in the eastern cemetery at the City of the Dead, the dome of Sultan Qansuh Abu Said has been fully renovated by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in cooperation with the Ministry of Housing.

The dome dates to 1498 AD and was built as the burial ground for the Mamluk sultan Qansuh Abu Said. Qansuh was a Circassian from the Burji Dynasty and he ruled as the 23rd Sultan of Egypt from 1498 until 1500 AD. The work done included restoring the dome facades, its copper crescent, inlaid windows with stained glass, lighting system, and panels and signs for visitors.
