A Spanish archaeological mission working at al-Bahnasa in Minya governorate has unearthed valuable finds. The team discovered rock-cut tombs from the Ptolemaic and Greco-Roman periods, filled with treasures including coffins, mummies, papyri, golden masks, statues, and artifacts.
A standout discovery was the unearthing of terracotta statues depicting the goddess Isis-Aphrodite, marking the first instance such items were found at this site. Among the finds were 25 mummies, some adorned with funerary masks and gold. Notably, two mummies featured golden tongues placed in their mouths, a unique burial custom of the time at al-Bahnasa.
These discoveries are crucial as they illuminate the historical and cultural landscape of al-Bahnasa, showcasing the unique burial practices and artistic expressions of the Ptolemaic and Greco-Roman periods.
